Prepare your family, and your pets, for storm damage

dog playing on carpet floor Tips for keeping your fur babies safe when storm damage happens

Are you prepared? Storm damage in Texoma can result from severe thunderstorms, hail storms, tornadoes and flooding.

And sometimes, it all hits at once.

SERVPRO of Wichita Falls wants to help you be prepared before the storm arrives.

Make a family plan. Know where to meet if you're separated. And don't forget to make plans for your pets!

Include basic survival items and items to keep your pet happy and comfortable.

  • Food. At least a three day supply in an airtight, waterproof container.
  • Water. At least three days of water specifically for your pets.
  • Medicines and medical records.
  • Important documents. Registration information, adoption papers and vaccination documents. Talk to your veterinarian about microchipping and enrolling your pet in a recovery database.
  • First aid kit. Cotton bandage rolls, bandage tape and scissors; antibiotic ointment; flea and tick prevention; latex gloves, isopropyl alcohol and saline solution. Including a pet first aid reference book is a good idea too.
  • Collar or harness with ID tag, rabies tag and a leash.
  • Crate or pet carrier. Have a sturdy, safe crate or carrier in case you need to evacuate. The carrier should be large enough for your pet to stand, turn around and lie down.
  • Sanitation. Pet litter and litter box if appropriate, newspapers, paper towels, plastic trash bags and household chlorine bleach.
  • A picture of you and your pet together. If you become separated, a picture of you and your pet together will help you document ownership and allow others to assist you. Add species, breed, age, sex, color and distinguishing characteristics.
  • Familiar items. Familiar items, such as treats, toys and bedding can help reduce stress for your pet.

Have a plan in place for your entire family! For more planning tips, visit:

When freezing temps freeze pipes

3/23/2023 (Permalink)

kitchen, frozen waterfall from ceiling Call the cleanup and restoration experts at SERVPRO of Wichita Falls

Living in North Texas, we don’t have to deal with the months of freezing temperatures that are typical in the northern parts of the country; however, we unfortunately still deal with frozen pipes on a regular basis.

Frozen pipes are inconvenient and problematic. Along with preventing water flow into your home, they regularly burst and cause costly damages. Be better prepared for the next artic blast by following these frozen pipe prevention tips:

  • Keep faucets dripping to relieve pressure and prevent the pipes from freezing. Particularly important over night when your plumbing system is not being used frequently and the temperature is dropping.
  • Disconnect hoses on outdoor faucets and use faucet covers to prevent them from freezing.
  • Seal any leaks that might be allowing cold air inside your house, especially in areas that are close to pipes.
  • If you have some particularly vulnerable pipes you can use heat tape. Heat tape and heat cables are electrically powered heat sources that you wrap around pipes that are at risk for freezing. Like using any other type of heater, they will need to be monitored to ensure their safe use.
  • Try to keep your house at a constant temperature all day and night. Many people turn down thermostats when they go to bed, but night time is when your pipes are most likely to freeze. Opening cabinet doors, especially at night, allows the warm air in your home to circle around pipes and reduce their risk of freezing.
  • Additional insulation is one of the best choices when preparing your house for winter weather. Any pipes on outdoor walls or in areas with less insulation (i.e. attic) may need some foam or fiberglass sleeves from your local hardware store. Insulation will always be less expensive than a water damage, so the more insulation the better.

If you do experience a burst pipe this winter, call SERVPRO of Wichita Falls. We are a 24-hour emergency service business, and can have a professional on site within hours to help you get your home back to normal. Call us anytime at 940-263-1550.

Even "small" ice storms can create major damage

2/7/2023 (Permalink)

commercial hallway, water on floor From large commercial to small residential losses, SERVPRO of Wichita Falls is here to help.

When most of us think of storm damage, we think of the big hurricanes we see on television, destroying everything is a huge path of destruction.

And while our team of professionals have deployed to restore hurricane damaged areas, we also focus on the smaller storms close to home.

While damage from thunderstorms and tornadoes is common, one thing gets very little recognition when it comes to storm damage: ice.

Ice storms here in Texoma vary from closing two states to just spotty damage. And it's the latter that can be hard to detect.

Frigid temperatures combined with ice storms can lead to frozen pipes, as well as hidden water pockets on roofs, gutters and downspouts.

And when it finally thaws, water will take the path of least resistance, typically down and inside your walls.

It may take days before you notice signs of what was storm damage, but now looks like water damage.

Once you see it, call the trusted experts at SERVPRO of Wichita Falls. We're here to help.

Arctic temperatures and ice storms can wreck havoc on your plumbing

2/1/2023 (Permalink)

church sanctuary, pews, wet carpet Here to help your home and business when storm damage happens.

Temperatures have been below freezing all week, and recurring ice storms are wrecking havoc on plumbing.

SERVPRO of Wichita Falls wants to remind our followers to bring your pets inside and follow these simple tips to avoid potential water damage from bursting pipes:

When temperatures plummet, the risk of your pipes freezing and bursting skyrockets. In fact, burst pipes are one of the most common causes of property damage during frigid weather and can cause thousands in water damage—easily $5,000 or more.

The pipes most at risk are those in unheated interior spaces such as basements, attics, and garages. But even pipes running through cabinets or exterior walls can freeze. The good news is there are some simple things you can do to keep your water running and your house dry.

Open cabinet doors and keep faucets dripping to help prevent freezing. Keep your thermostats turned up to maintain a constant temperature.

And if storm damage does happen, call the cleanup and restoration experts at SERVPRO of Wichita Falls.

wet flooded floors Storm damage? Call the experts at SERVPRO of Wichita Falls

Storm damage is a term that covers a lot of actual damage events. Wind, rain, fire, and water can all create damage during a storm.

Here in Texoma, our winter storm damage typically involves ice and frigid temperatures, leading to broken pipes and water damage.

You know our team is on the way to help mitigate damages, but may wonder what to do, or not to do until we get there. Here's some basic tips:

  • Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting.
  • Remove art objects to a safe, dry place.
  • Gather loose items from floors.
  • Don't leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpet or floors.
  • Don't use your household vacuum to remove water.
  • Don't use television or other household appliances.
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet, and keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging.

Best advice? Wait for our team of cleanup and restoration experts instead of doing it yourself.

Bare studs in ceiling and walls Hidden storm damage causes extensive water damage

We've had customers ask, "How do you know the extent of damage we've had after a storm?"

We don't, until our expertly trained technicians arrive onsite and begin the inspection of your property.

Take a look at this photo. You'll notice the ceiling and adjacent walls have been stripped down to the studs.

Upon arrival, our technicians noted water damage on the ceiling, as well as damage to all the walls in this one room. Damage was also noted in other rooms, though less severe.

Once our teams began the demolition of the ceiling, they noted roof damage that had led to the water leak. This caused all surfaces and the insulation to get wet, which had to be promptly removed.

Our technicians continued to remove all wet materials so we could begin the drying and restoration process.

Not all water damage is easily visible, but damage can't hide from our professionals.

That's why more customers trust SERVPRO for their restoration needs.

But we prepared our equipment and teams to be ready for whatever happened.

Although, to be fair, he is a ground hog, not a meteorologist.

Winter in Texoma can be calm and mild, with most days averaging sixty degrees and offering a lot of sunshine.

Then, the very next day, a burst of arctic air can sweep across the western plains and plunge us into the low teens.

Whichever weather pattern arrives on the horizon, one thing is certain.

Thunderstorms, hail storms, tornadoes, ice storms and snow will certainly lead to storm damage throughout the region.

All of which has wrecked havoc on many of our communities.

SERVPRO of Wichita Falls provided boarding and tarping of homes and businesses to help secure property from further damage, even as the storms continued to rage.

Once the sun came out, our professionally trained technicians inspected the properties and began extracting water and removing wet materials.

closet with clothes ceiling damage Ceiling leak leads to wet and dirty clothing

Storm damage isn't always uprooted trees and hail damaged vehicles.

Sometimes, the damage isn't noticeable until another rain comes along and reveals damages shingles and water damaged ceilings.

For this customer, it wasn't noticed until the ceiling began leaking and making a mess of his wife's clothing, something she was not happy about!

Our SERVPRO of Lawton technicians inspected the area, and cut a hole in the sheet rock to inspect the area above.

Sure enough, small pinholes of daylight showed damaged shingles, and the recent rains were heavy enough to cause the interior damage.

We provided our estimate and documentation to the insurance agent, who met with the adjuster and agreed to the restoration protocol we outlined.

While the job was a bit messy, the customer was happy that it was completed quickly and her clothes were once again safely tucked away in the closet.

1979 tornado outbreak known as "Terrible Tuesday."

4/10/2020 (Permalink)

tornado 1979 tornado outbreak leaves massive damage and 57 dead in Texoma.

April 10th, 1979 started out like any other day in Texoma.

But as the day progressed, and the storms began to form, a good day turned into a bad day.

Around 3:05 in the afternoon, the first tornado formed near Crowell, Texas. About 35 minutes later, the first killer one of the outbreak ripped through Vernon and killed 11 people. Then the supercell spawned one that killed three people in Lawton, Oklahoma.

The third supercell was the one that formed the Seymour and Wichita Falls tornadoes as part of a three-member tornado family. The first tornado formed near Seymour at around 4:53 pm. The storm spawned a second tornado that moved through the south and east sides of Wichita Falls at around 6:00 pm. The third member of the family formed near Waurika at around 8:00 p.m.

By the end of the day, 54 people lost their lives in Texas, three were killed in Oklahoma and one was killed in Indiana.

The Wichita Falls tornado alone killed 42 people and caused $400 million in damage. The tornado cut a path 8 miles through the city, with significant devastation.

Today, we remember "Terrible Tuesday" and honor those who suffered damage from this storm.

And we're here to help Texoma residents recover from future storms that may occur.

But this particular morning, the agent was calling because his office had suffered damage. Overnight storms had wind gusts over 53 miles per hour, and the heavy rains left over 4 inches in our rain gauge.

It had also taken a part of his roof and left his office soaked in standing water.

One call to SERVPRO of Wichita Falls and our team of professionals were on site, removing wet ceiling tiles and insulation and extracting water from floors and cubicles.

We established a drying protocol and monitored the job site until we were sure we had it SERVPRO dry.

Summer storms wreck havoc on local mall

2/8/2019 (Permalink)

After 9 inches of rainfall in one day, this local mall flooded and many retailers were closed for a week.

“Since Saturday, these Oklahoma counties have experienced flooding, severe storms, tornadoes and straight-line winds. Initial reports show damage in numerous communities including Apache, Cyril, Lawton, Maysville and Walters. Further damage assessments are ongoing.” - Oklahoma Governor Todd Lamb.

That was in June, 2016. Over 9 inches of rain fell in one morning in the Lawton area. And a total of nine counties were included in the state of emergency declaration.

SERVPRO of Wichita Falls responded to this storm quickly in order to help the local retailers at the mall.

The flooding affected every store within the mall, some worse than others.

This sports store had water standing inches deep, until our SERVPRO of Wichita Falls team arrived.

We immediately began extracting water, then began pulling up the damaged carpet. An inspection in their storage area revealed severely damaged drywall and wet insulation, which was removed.

After setting up air movers and dehumidifiers, we moved on the adjacent retails.

Overall, the cleanup from this storm took about a week. The impact on retailers and homeowners was heartbreaking.

SERVPRO of Wichita Falls was honored to provide assistance to these retailers during their time of disaster.

And we're here to help you. When disaster strikes, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Wichita Falls.

Why Professional Storm Damage Restoration is Important

3/22/2018 (Permalink)

Why Professional Storm Damage Restoration is Important

While we can control many things in life, we may control natural calamities like wind damage, river flooding, hurricane damage, ice damage, ground water penetration, ice dams and much more. The weather system is dynamic and within a split second, it can cause massive roof damage, frozen pipes, and ice damming. More often, these natural events bring about huge impacts like flooding. At this point let us narrow down to storm damage and how you can seek the help of experts with flood pumps to help you with storm remediation.

What is a Storm Damage?

Firstly, it comes as a result of a severely troubled state of the atmosphere resulting in extreme weather conditions. Sometimes, a storm can be accompanied by rain, hail falls, and ice damming. Storms can cause damages including roof damage, wind damage, ice damage, hail damage, and roof damage which further causes roof leak.

Some storms could be less severe while others are violent, for instance, a hurricane. The resulting hurricane damage can cause massive property losses. Other damages related to storms include the creation of ice dams, flood waters, river flooding, frozen pipes from ice formation, roof leaks, wind damage, and ground water.

Effects of Storm Damage

Storms come with impacts so big. Severe storms can cause hurricane damages, flood water, ice damage, and frozen pipes. Your entire home could suffer roof damage that blows away your entire or part of your roof resulting in a roof leak. There's no way you can live in a house with a broken roof, so roof repair needs to be done as soon as possible.

Another problem could be hail damage which results from hail storms and can seriously destroy many properties. Also, storms could come with falling ice which creates ice damage in terms of ice dams. Ice damming is quite risky as it can destroy property or kill animals such as pets, not forgetting human beings.

We have already mentioned that storms can result in lots of flood water, and you need a storm remediation company with a powerful flood pump to carry out the water restoration and home restoration. River flooding or ground water can also cause massive property damage if storm remediation process is not expedited. The effect of storms includes property damage inform of rusting, rotting, and mold growth. If not worked on soon, such damage could result to adverse effects that would require high amounts of money for storm restoration and home restoration. It can leave people bankrupt, especially if they are not signed up for storm related insurance premiums.

Storms and electricity have never been friends. These damages can bring down utility supply lines and pose further danger to life and property. When people suffer storm effects, storm remediation and home restoration should be started as quickly as possible to prevent further damages. Roof repair and elimination of flood water should be the first priority. Storm remediation and water restoration should be left to the professionals with the right equipment like flood pump.

Storm Damage Restoration

Storms and flooding can cause huge damages – water damage, roof damage, hail damage, and wind damage which consequently result to flooding, ground water, roof leak, ice damming, ice dams, river flooding, and more. The answer after storm damage is to do storm remediation or storm restoration, water restoration, home restoration, and business restoration.

Professional Storm Remediation

Damage such as hurricane damage causes negative effects – it could take away your roof or leave you with roof leaks which will cost a lot in roof repair. But there is a process of restoration after such – after all, people need to move on with life. The solution is to call professionals to do storm restoration or storm remediation. It is true that you can try to work on it by yourself, but this is only to a very small extent – such as doing water cleanup from flooding or minor roof repair.

What you need is a professional storm remediation. Storm restoration companies exist to help people do home restoration and water restoration that result from storm and hail damage. The experts usually come with powerful tools like a flood pump to clean up the water during storm remediation. If you choose to do it your own, how do you even start dealing with frozen pipes? So, call the storm remediation company in your State for assistance. We can control some issues in life, but some we cannot. When they hit, we can use professional restoration services to help us get back up!

Tips For Preventing Frozen Pipes

2/2/2018 (Permalink)

Pipes on an outdoor wall with additional insulation to prevent them from freezing.

Living in North Texas, we don’t have to deal with the months of freezing temperatures that are typical in the northern parts of the country; however, we unfortunately still deal with frozen pipes on a regular basis. Homes in warmer climates tend to lack the insulation that is the standard in places with frigid winter temperatures, so whenever we experience freezing weather pipes are quickly frozen if precautions have not been taken.

While we are all praying for the much-needed rain to help Texoma recover from the Stage 5 drought, be aware for sudden drops into freezing temperatures.  If you have not winterized any of your exterior pipes, keep an eye out for cracked pipes as the day continues tomorrow.  Every winter season in Texoma, brings freeze events where we see several homes with broken pipes in attic spaces as well as exterior water intrusions due to cracked exterior pipes.
